Action Socials!
This is not a project, so any members can come to these with or without a CRB check!
This is a space to advertise social events coming up and to display our photos of the events!
Cheers!
And I hope to see you at our next social!

Easter & Summer Holidays
Struggling to find something useful to do over your holidays? Well why not make a difference and give to children from all sorts of backgrounds the chance to have five days of holiday fun! We need a team of volunteers to get involved in all aspects of running a residential project; from helping to plan meals, organising the activities and looking after the children... there is a role for everyone!
We hold training sessions so you’ll have plenty of support! It’s a fantastic experience and a really good way to make great friends with other volunteers whilst making a real difference to some children’s lives.

Green Fingers
We do gardening activities; lots of carpentry and construction is involved as well as more typical gardening activities. The allotment is for the use of all the projects, for socials and to take their beneficiaries there for a day of activities. Through BBQs, tool use, and some educational stuff thrown in, we hope to create interest in, and promote; play, healthy eating, exercise and environmental awareness. We also do days just for volunteers to keep the allotment in good shape.

Green Streets
Want to help save the world from environmental dangers? We do! We care about the environment and want to spread the message to reduce, reuse and recycle. You can help us throughout the year to inform people about how they can improve their impact on the environment by campaigning and even lobbying relevant bodies. You can allso help us co-ordinate with all the student halls to take unwanted goods to shelters, hostels and charity shops. We also hold free shops at the union and we need many volunteers to help sort and distribute items.

Hawksworth Project
Hawksworth Wood Project runs out of term time for the period of one week (Mon to Fri) during easter and summer holidays.
It works with children aged 8 to 10 from the local area and are considered disadvantaged. During the week we do a number of workshops which involve drama, art and crafts, sports and games. This is all carried out within the Hawksworth Wood Children's Centre, both inside and outside.
This project only started in easter 2008 but due to its success was followed up in the summer holidays and we hope it's great success will continue! hawksworthwood@leedsaction.co.ukCoordinator(s)- Gareth

Interaction
Watch this space for events where we really mix things up! In Interaction, projects join forces to mix volunteers and children and young people from many different proejcts to run events bigger and better than we could do alone. It's a great way to let the people we help to get the opportunity to socialise with each other. It also gives volunteers a taster of what different projects are like.

Older People's Tea Party
Once a year we take around 250 older people in the community to the union for a bigger than life tea party. The event includes food, drinks, live entertainment, dancing and even a spot of bingo. Who knows you might even end up sharing a cuppa with the mayor, one of our frequent prestigious guests. Held in the refectory, we need lots of help with transport, serving food and having a good old chin-wag with our guests.

Reach
We take young people aged 12-16 who have learning difficulties away for the weekend. Take them on Safari, horse riding, canoeing and farm visits to name just a few of the exciting activities available. Volunteers will be the ‘guardian angel’ to one young person throughout the weekend, helping them at meal times and getting up and going to bed. You’ll be giving their parents a well earned rest too!

Referrals
Action has strong links with other groups doing community based volunteering. Having referral projects allows us to offer a wider range of opportunities to our volunteers. If you volunteer on a referral project you are still an Action member and as such you still receive full support, you can gain accreditation and come along to all of the socials. Below are some of the opportunities available:
Shire View for Visually Impaired
Shire Views is a drop-in resource centre run by and for blind and partially sighted people. There are opportunities to help with various groups that are run at the centre offering education, advice, support, training, information and counselling to service users. Groups include braille classes, computer classes, craft groups, a women's group, support groups, social groups and more.
The Rookery
The Rookery is home to 12 adults with learning difficulties, based in Chapel Allerton. Volunteers are needed to be a “buddy” to some some of service users, who wish to do more things within the community and need support to do so. Activities may include swimming, going to the library, pub, shopping, cinema, and going to the local park.
Bethel Day Care Centre
Bethel Day Care Centre is a drop-in centre for elderly people living in the local community. Volunteers are required to help with one-off activities such as day trips, as well providing entertainment for residents and helping out with everyday activities such as gardening.
Older Active People
Provides a range of activities for local people aged 55+ in the local area. They offer a befriending scheme that encourages volunteers to visit an elderly service user once a week.
After School Clubs at Woodsley Centre
Volunteers are required to help with any of the following after school clubs:
- A Secondary Club to assist local children working twards their GCSEs and SATS with homework, coursework and projects.
- A Drama Club for those aged 6-13 years, which aims to improve children’s confidence and ability to work in groups through role-play.
- A Citizenship Building Club for those aged 6-15. The group seeks to develop children’s understanding of environmental issues, understanding of disability, and regard for other religions and cultures.
- A Primary Club assisting children with Primary school subjects.
- A Craft Club for 5-13 years. Activities include art, craft, painting, drawing, designing, etc. Very messy, but lots of fun for all involved!
- A Kids’ Press Club which is mainly aimed at secondary school kids and encourages them to look at all forms of media communication. One of the projects involves helping the children produce a local community newsletter.
There are lots more opportunities for you to get involved in the community; tell us what you are interested in and we will try and find the right placement for you.
